[UPDATE: David Brooks...Is Chauncey Gardener]
For all those who may have lost a job or had the bank foreclose on the house, David Brooks of The New York Times has consoling words for you:
Social change has a natural rhythm. The season of prosperity gives way to the season of economic scarcity, and out of the winter of recession, new growth has room to emerge. A stimulus package may be necessary, but unless designed with care, its main effect will be to prop up the drying husks of the fall.

I know what he's saying. When he mentions "drying husks of the fall," he is talking about mismanaged companies, overspending states, and individuals (home owners) buying more house than they can afford, thereby speculating on money they don't have. They are being rewarded with bailouts. Obama intends to spend on schemes that are deemed unworthy - alternative energy, for instance. Corporations already invest in such schemes, but only the ones that are cost effective. The others are just sloppy thousandths schemes.
We need to encourage a thrift-based, much less materialistic society, in which you don't buy what you can't afford. A house is the only thing an individual should borrow for.
It sadly echoes a comment made by Peter Sellars’ character (a gardener with severely diminished intelligence) in the black comedy “Being There”: - “...growth has its season… as long as the roots are not severed, all is well, and all will be well in the garden.” He is immediately mistaken for an economics guru by the wealthy financier Benjamin Rand.
