Obama: Why? What are you going to do with them? McKiernan and JCS: We really can't say. Obama: OK you can have 17000. Surely any policy review will weigh up the options, see that Obama in his decision to send a further 17-20000 troops is leaning on the side of escalation rather than disengagement, and will continue down that path. The major decision (sending the troops) has already been made; I can't see a policy review recognising the war as a lost cause and recommending a volte face And I like this quote by McKiernan: “There’s always an inclination to relate what we’re doing with previous nations,” he said, adding, “I think that’s a very unhealthy comparison.” Because we're Americans goddamnit!
