Hi Scott,

I do not know whether my last comment was received. If it was I apologize for the redundancy.

I also think Mr. Khalaji's article is rather biased and has a coloring of the Washington Institute of Near East Policy.

First, there has been some more rumblings against Ahmadinejad's government. This time from Qom. Ayatollah Reza Ostadi a member of the assembly of experts and leader of the Friday prayers in Qom. In his sermon yesterday he criticized the Ahmadinejad government and declared that he is resigning from leading the prayers in protest.

Ayatollah Montazeri has issued another Fatwa condemning the governments policies and proclaiming the government illegitimate. I think although Montazeri has been marginalized his moral authority should not be underestimated.

Hello Scott,
I think that more cracks than what you have alluded to can be seen in the clerical establishment. In fact Ayatollah Reza Ostadi who is a cleric associated with conservatism and a member of the Expediency Discernment Council led the Friday prayers yesterday. During his sermon he criticized Ahmadinejad et al although he stopped short of criticizing the supreme leader.

Ayatollah Montazeri albeit marginalized has issued another strong statement condemning the iranian government:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/persian/iran/2009/07/090710_op_ir88_montazeri_kadivar.shtml

A public statement from Karroubi: Karroubi has officially called on Shahroudi ( head of judiciary) to release the protesters detained in prison before his term (as head of judiciary) is over.

So maybe things are happening, (I am an incurable optimist).

Hoping this stuff maybe useful,

So far, I count six Grand Ayatollahs that have made strong statements in favor of the protesters. If you're right and there are only 15 Grand Ayatollahs living, that makes more than a third of the most powerful clerics in Shia Islam boldly backing the protests...

Here's a list of the clerics ... http://b3ndix.blogspot.com/
