"Does he dare risk hugging Mahmoud to the point where he goes down with him?"
He already has. For Khamenei to abandon Ahmadinejad would mean admitting he was wrong, and would encourage his enemies even further. Khamenei and Ahmadinejad will rule together or die together.

AlthougH many of ahmadinejad's supporters no longer support him but one should note that this does not mean they don't support the Supreme Leader because he has supported him. they no longer support him because he has delayed obeying the order of Supreme leader. Although it is being said day after day in different media outlets that the leader does not have much support among iranians or the clerics I still believe he has a big stronghold among the people. It is tru that the leader's taking side with the president in the aftermath of the election made a group of people angry and resentin the leader but this group mainly didn't supported him even before the election so there is no big chaange in the number of his supportes now. the fact is that his opponents are more vocal today than they were before.

Excellent analysis, dear Scott!!!

In my opinion, If Mahmoud goes down then it will merely be a matter of time till he also lose his leadership! Their fates are strongly interconnected!
