Wow. footage from Shiraz & Rasht. I hope I would have such courage in a similar situation.
Why are they burning a Russian flag? Did I miss something?
The Russian govt officially recognized and congratulated Ahmadinejad as winner of the election within a couple of days after the vote. Ahmadinejad’s only trip out of Iran since the election was to a conference in Russia where he was warmly welcomed. The Iranian regime blames agents of other governments for fomenting the protests. When the govt raises the old standard, “Death to America”, the people now reply with “Death to Russia”.
an aside: Most likely, the Russian govt recognized Ahmadinejad so quickly because Putin worries about any show of opposition to authoritarian govt. Also, a day or 2 after the people of Iran began to shout “Death to Russia”, an agency of the Russian govt released a statement that, upon analysis, there could have been irregularities in the election results, but that Ahmadinejad molt likely did win. Of course it did not help the Russian govt at all in the eyes of the people.
