"is Ahmadinejad’s speech a gesture of apology to the Supreme Leader," --I don't think he was apologizing. He restated that every body is wrong and that he is the only person who is right. He talks to people in a way as if they are gullible children. I encourage any person with a background in body language or rhetorics to study his speeches, s/he will probably come to very interesting conclusions! My goodness how much I dislike the way he speaks!

Regarding prisoners released. I'm not shure it wasn't the Head of the Judiciary himself and maybe approved from higher.

The prisoners (drug dealers, thief and thugs) have been released to make space for the arrest of the thinkers, the freedom seekers and the protesters. It also helps that the Basiji can recruit these thugs. Don't think he is scared or he is kind. He wants to make room for the arrest of his opposition.
This was evident on the streets some 10 days ago. Sudden appearance of petty criminals again in areas that they had been wiped from. Mr. Khamanei has no shame.

25% of iran's prisoners freed? If true, then the supreme leader must be scared as hell!

I'm not really qualified to comment much but some of this news makes my head shake. Not all news is bad but it seems like the bad news dominates both the media and people's attention. I can't wait till we start hearing better news from and about Iran. As well as from other parts of the world.

Knauf's General Counsel Jörg Schanow in Germany has declared the letter was sent by the Tehran management to its Iranian employees on July 21. He did not know why it had been sent - as it did not correspond with the company's overall corporate policy.
Apparently the Iranian government pressured the Iranian branche of Knauf to issue the order after the arrest of a senior executive, as a condition for the executive's release.
It's not easy doing business abroad...

The folks in the West can help. Here is report of wrongful action by a German company. Take them to cause. Demand the company to make its position clear. Lodge complaint in European Court and force the German government and Knauf to come clean. In the past European and Westerners have been known to sell the rights of Iranians for short term gains and economical interests. If this is happening force the world to realize it.

If I was German, I could not go to bed at night knowing that people in Iran are protesting and a German company is misbehaving. Of Course Knauf is innocent till proven guilty, but tell it to make its position clear. Silence in the west is unacceptable. When the Green wave succeeds, the silent partners of the criminal regime will be rejected and punished. Do not make the mistake of falling on the wrong side of history.

As to the letter of German company Knauf: I find this highly strange and weird. The form of the letter which is linked in the Wall Street Journal article seems to me very unusal. It is also very extraordinary (if not unprecedented) that a German (meaning the Federal Republic of Germany) company threatens to release employees for reasons of opinion. I am German, and I can not believe this. Either the company was put under enormous pressure (which would put Iran's regime in a bad light rather than the company), or the story needs further thorough evidence. I hope, though, that it is not true.
