It’s becoming clear what the regime’s goals were for the day, and that they decisively failed. The regime planned to depict opposition leaders as weaklings without popular, frightened from the scene by the robust anger of real Iranians. So they let Mousavi appear only in a pro-government rally surrounded by basij hecklers. They also sent plainclothes basij to attack Khatami. The official news versions of events is that opposition leaders came to the rally and were denounced as hypocrites by the People.
It’s a good plan, but it failed. The government story makes no sense in light of footage of tens of thousands of opposition protesters that leaked out of Iran almost immediately. Mousavi’s hecklers and Khatami’s attackers clearly aren’t the genuine voice of the Iranian people — they come across as government thugs and the opposition leaders seem courageous for facing them.
(ps: I say this despite the regime’s brilliantly evil ploy of choosing as one of Mousavi’s basij hecklers a man holding a baby.)
WOW. The “main” news page for today had 50 comments and I could not post any comments myself, there was not even the option to do so.
I simply want to thank EA and all those who contribute commentary to the site for creating an environment which brings people from all across the world for a common cause. I feel a part of a community greater than myself and any one individual. While myself and many commenting on this site are not in the streets, together we show a united voice to support the movement in Iran.

Sorry about the comments issue everyone- the theme is supposed to break every 50 comments up into a new page, but instead it just closed comments completely. I’ve now changed the limit to 500, so hopefully we won’t get hit by this bug again.
