I know nothing about the Iranian economy beyond what I have read here. My first reaction to the videos was that the issue of the subsidies is real and important for the well-being of the poor. At the same time it’s a great way to distract from the many recent announcements of IRGC corporate purchases. In the first video, someone said that increased privatization was designed to give the citizens a more active role in the economy. IRGC seems to have a different interpretation

Maybe I misunderstand how the coupon system works. What I was getting at is that redistributing the coupons doesn’t increase the wealth available to the people… the discussion distracts from the IRGC money which seems to be partitioned off. Its corporate earnings aren’t available for redistribution, are they? Doesn’t “privatization” mean that earnings which formerly went to the govt now go to the IRGC, decreasing the pool of money available to distribute as coupons?
