I'm divided between wanting to criticise based on the logic of the whole exercise (they are sending so many troops to attack exactly what, and who are they hoping will wave the white flag?), amazement that Obama has really made such a poor effort to get himself out of the strategic corner he's backed into and a feeling of a sort of weary resignation at the banality of the decision. I know it's well worn territory but 'Tragedy of American Diplomacy" is still the title that best fits...

Anyway, back to the point of the original blog post. Any chance of adding the famous LBJ Johns Hopkins speech from '65? I wouldn't be surprised to find parallels with what Obama says this evening. Sigh.

Edward,

I think there were officials considering it at end of Bush Administration and even up March in Obama Administration but mood shifted after Karzai trip to Washington.

Interesting. The comparison that was running in my mind was the similarity in the US' relation with Diem and Karzai. The CIA staged a coup against Diem, and the general consensus is that displeasure with Karzai is probably as great as it was with the South Vietnamese leader. Would anyone seriously contemplate staging a coup against Karzai, today?
