    Was watching the following clip…

    http://www.youtube.com/user/freedommessenger20#p/a/u/1/Aq2oaz-poZ8

Could someone please translate the chant? “Ay/Hay hadd min as-silah/az-zilah”? Is this a Moharram chant? Much appreciated.

    Supp,

As to the van, you are probably right, just translated the Persian Youtube entry in a haste. In the other clip people shout: “Heyhat, zellat, zellat”. I can not say, if it is a Moharram chant, but it means: Dear me! (as to this) humiliation and repression.

    Bill,

    You are welcome :-)

Thanks, Arshama. Once you gave me “heyhat,” it was easy to find. The most common transliteration I could find on the web was “Heyhat menna zellah,” which apparently is a “Hoseynid” proverb that I’ve found variously translated as “Woe upon the wretched” or “We will never bow down (to this humiliation?)”

    supp:

“Hayhat menazzellah” means approximately: “Shame on us if we accept tyranny and submit to oppression”.

Thank you, Supp and Abtam, for digging up the exact meaning of “hayhat menazellah”. (As a good Iranian nationalist my Arabic is zero ;-)

Bill, the police van story had a sequel, commented as a new team sport in Tehran on #iranelection: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MqqBTmMPyas

“Hey Haat mena zella” it is not Persian, it is an Arabic sentences related to religious matters and it means(Nearly , because my Arabic Knowledge is limited):
” We never go under diminution” or you can say (not exactly but equally in this contest):
“Death is better than living under humiliating dictatorship”
It was one the most important slogan of Imam Hosein in Ashura

Yes the phrase is Arabic and means “woe onto us (or anyone) who accepts tyranny” (zella means lots of things including miserable life dictated by others), and the implications are clear. The brave Iranians on the streets have gone beyond the ordinary and are entering the realm of the heroic. We must recognize this important issue. If there is to be a democratic Iran then these will be the heroes who also bring about a much needed change in the moral structure of the society where once again good means something, and human values will be respected. O my I am at times in tears when I ponder all that is going on with yes these national heroes of Iran. The struggle is on, and I make an earnest request of all who recognize the dimension of this national uprising and of this fight for freedom and justice will aid us. Please.

PS Zella means khaari in Persian, wretchedness, lowly life due to the absence of the good.

    Arshama,

To funny “Team Sport.” What next a Bash a Basiji national holiday!!! As much as I hate violence I have to admit I would be joining in on this if I was there. I know my Persian friend, a girl no less, would literally be jumping up and down on that van calling them all kinds of names. God those Persian women are a handful!! The regime has no idea of what they stirred up!!!! You have to love an angry Persian women–just don’t get in her way!!!

    Thx

    Bill,

Bash a Bassiji already started on Ashura, when some of them were badly beaten or robbed their uniforms, helmets and even their shoes. I am proud of all those people who prevented angry protesters to go further, asking them to spare their “brothers”. I hate violence as well and am amazed of the people of Rasht, who mocked regime protesters today: http://www.peykeiran.com/Content.aspx?ID=11442
