We’ll have “A Gut Reaction to the State of the Union” on Friday. By coincidence, I was on a panel discussing Obama’s first year, in front of an audience rather disappointed with the Administration and the state of “America”, a few hours before it was delivered. Is there any reason to change that disappointment in light of the following?

Our Constitution declares that from time to time, the president shall give to Congress information about the state of our union. For 220 years, our leaders have fulfilled this duty. After covering his health care proposals and underlining the importance of financial reform, Obama turned to foreign policy. He talked of the “Administration taking out more al-Qaeda high-level operatives”. He admitted that the decision to increased the number of troops in Afghanistan was one of the toughest he had ever made, adding that his Administration is doing a good job in getting troops out of Iraq even though it is not an easy process. On Iran, Obama reiterated the dual-track approach of engagement and sanctions.
Perhaps the most striking Obama reflection, however, was on the Israeli-Palestinian peace process: “The Middle East peace process has not moved forward. And I think it’s fair to say that for all our efforts at early engagement, it is not where I want it to be.”

It was here more than two centuries ago that our first Congress served and our first President was inaugurated. It was here, in the early days of our Republic, that Hamilton and Jefferson debated how best to administer a young economy and to ensure that our nation rewarded the talents and drive of its people. Last Saturday, President Obama devoted his Weekly Address to the economic crisis. The President stated that, thanks to the Recovery Act, business investment is showing signs of stability, providing jobs to unemployed Americans.
Obama said that this economic crisis would pass and, indeed, there would not be another one if the US built “a new foundation strong enough to withstand future economic storms and support lasting prosperity”. There would be no return to an economy where “the growth is based on inflated profits and maxed-out credit cards”.
OBAMA: Today, I’d like to talk with you about a subject that I know is on everyone’s mind, and that’s the state of our economy. Yesterday, we received a report on our Gross Domestic Product. That’s a measure of our overall economic performance. The report showed that in the first few months of this year, the recession we faced when I took office was even deeper than anyone thought at the time. It told us how close we were to the edge. President Barack Obama, at his press conference after the end of the G8 Summit in L’Aquila, Italy, focused on the environment, global economy, and international security. As for Iran, he reiterated the deep concern of the international community over the extreme violence against demonstrations and stated that the door for negotiation is open to Tehran until September, when the G20 Summit will be held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in the US.

HOST GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: Major milestone this week here in Iraq with the American troops pulling out of the cities. And I wonder if you can put the broader American mission in context. Are we in the process of securing victory or cutting our losses to come home?
BIDEN: Securing victory. Look, the president and I laid out a plan in the campaign which was twofold. One, withdraw our troops from Iraq in a rational timetable consistent with what the Iraqis want. And the same time, leave behind a stable and secure country.
And one of the reasons I’m here, George, is to push the last end of that, which is the need for political settlement on some important issues between Arabs and Kurds and among the confessional groups. And I think we’re well on our way. Read the rest of this entry »
