A suspected suicide bomber, targeting police vehicles, has injured at least 15 people in İstanbul's central Taksim Square. The bomber had targeted a police vehicle and police suspected a suicide bomber was responsible.
The explosion occurred Sunday morning on Taksim square, close to a spot where police are stationed. According to İstanbul Police Chief Hüseyin Çapkın, six passers-by and nine police officers were injured.
An Al Jazeera correspondent reports that a second bomb was planted next to the suicide bomber: "That bomb did not go off but had it done so, with huge crowds gathered after the first explosion as you would expect...that bomb was designed to cause maximum damage." A spokesman for the Kurdish insurgent group PKK denied any knowledge of the bomb, saying he first learned of it from a telephone call from CNN.
