US Politics: The Military, Gays and Lesbians, and the Miraculous Repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"

Nothing I can say will change Pat Buchanan’s mind. Nor will it help the nearly 13,000 homosexuals expelled from the military since 1993. But repeal of DADT marks another step on the often rocky road to acceptance of civil rights for all Americans. The decision of Congress to end the ban, rather than cravenly letting the courts resolve the issue, shows that America’s political culture --- the "rules" by which both sides of the political divide abide --- still retains the democratic vitality to make tough choices for the right reasons. As politics becomes more and more polarized in America in the future, long may that respect for the will of the people as expressed by their representatives continue.

US Politics and Tax Cuts: Sanders' Remarkable 8 1/2-Hour "BernieBuster" Challenges Republicans...and Obama

Despite some hostile immediate reactions from progressives, including a non-binding resolution by the House Democratic Caucus that they would not even consider voting on the deal unless it was amended, Obama appeared to have won the argument within his party by Sunday.

But a remarkable piece of political theatre that took place on the floor of the Senate on Friday has energised opposition within some circles to the compromise. At 10:24 a.m., Bernie Sanders, the 69-year old Independent senator form Vermont, began a speech criticising the compromise as a “bad deal” for Americans. Eight and a half hours later, without eating or even sitting, Sanders concluded what became instantly known as the #filibernie on Twitter, where the speech trended Number 1 worldwide on Friday afternoon. While he was speaking the filibernie.com and berniesandersisstilltalking.com websites sprung up, and at the former the whole speech is still available on video with the comment: "Because somewhere on the internet this deserves to be looping forever...."

Post-Election Israel-US Analysis: Why Obama Should Seek More than "Empathy" with Netanyahu

Given that the Republicans are still a minority in the Senate, Obama's defeat on Tuesday was far from comprehensive. Even if it was, it does not follow that adopting a pro-Israeli position turns setback into success: the invocation that Obama needs "political empathy", making the analogy with President Clinton in 1994, when he "quickly adjusted his polices and moved toward the center" is shallow, both in its assumption of the same situation in 2010 and 16 years earlier and its dismissal of considerations beyond the domestic.

Beyond the Republicans, the US faces other powers --- from Ankara to Damascus to Tehran --- who wish to assert their influence in the region. So where is Washington's front line: in an artificial "empathy" at home or in a decisive move abroad to get a real gain, one which be useful at the ballot boxes in 2012 but have much greater benefits before that?

Northern Ireland: Why the Rise in Violence and Bombings?

In recent weeks, there has been a rise in violence, include a spate of bombings, in Northern Ireland. On Monday night, the Real IRA claimed responsibility for a car bomb outside a commercial centre in Derry.

The news has even caught the attention of The New York Times, and former US President Bill Clinton commented on the situation during his appearance last week at our partner in Dublin, the Clinton Institute for American Studies, noting that "every process leaves a trail of disappointees", especially amidst current economic difficulties, but adding that there is no evidence that politicians or the majority of the population want to abandon the path to reconciliation and stability.

Our partners at Outpost, a leading blog on Irish-American relations, have been providing cutting-edge coverage. Their latest comment, coming after the Derry bomb:

Apart from the continued condemnations [of the violence] that are a political necessity, more needs to be done. It is....time for constructive political engagement. The reversion to typical soundbites of condemnation and the need for entrenchment of peace and social stability have to be backed up [by action]. They can no longer be a disguise or vacuum for a lack of political dialogue.
