John was a solicitor in private practice, retiring as senior partner of his City of London firm in 1996. He remained a consultant until 2000 when he moved into academia, teaching American Politics and Modern American History and earning his doctorate at the University of Birmingham. He has just written his first novel and is a founder member of the Teenage Cancer Trust.
