For almost two years, there has been talks about conspiracies and a possible military coup in Turkey, with the “ultra-nationalist” Ergenekon organization providing the base for the overthrow of the Government. Ergenekon was alleged to include plotting journalists, soldiers, and politicians, with the finds of caches of arms, even in Ankara.
On Thursday, there was the claim of the interception of a truckload of arms. Two soldiers, with formal service documents, explained that they are going to the Ankara district of Gölbaşı to the command headquarters, but police forces confiscated the truck and questioned the soldiers and driver for eight hours before releasing them.
Muğla Provincial Gendarmerie Commander Colonel Salih Karataş announced that the weapons and grenades in the truck belong to the Turkish Army. “All the munitions belong to the TSK. They have the required documents for the transfer. They also have serial numbers on them. All the munitions are registered to the TSK inventory,” he emphasized.
Some other military sources told, “This is a routine practice. We prefer such methods of transfer of explosives in order to avoid risks.” Others in the military, however, gave a different story, saying that the Army does not any connection to the discovered weapons and munition.
There is further confusion because, under the Regulation on Transfer of Explosives, the armed forces should request a police escort for transfer of large amounts of munitions from one city to another. However, no such request was received by the Ankara Police Department, police sources reported. The Muğla Police Department also announced that they had no prior information about the truck and the munitions and “no one requested an escort for the truck from us”.
Earthquake in Turkey: At least 41 people are dead and about 100 are wounded in the eastern Turkish province of Elazıg early Monday after a 6.0-magnitude earthquake.
Israel-Palestine ”Proximity Talks:” On Sunday, the Palestine Liberation Organization’s executive committee approved a proposal allowing the Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas to begin indirect negotiations. However, there are two conditions for the four months of indirect talks: the outlines of a border deal with Israel and a complete Israeli settlement construction freeze.
U.S. Vice President Joe Biden will arrive in Israel on Monday afternoon. U.S. Mideast special envoy George Mitchell is still in Israel, and he is expected to have another meeting with PM Benjamin Netanyahu before going to Ramallah on late Monday. After their meeting on Sunday, Netanyahu said: “If there is a desire to get to direct talks through a corridor, then I think the sooner the better.”
USWarning to the Palestinian Authority: According to a document sent by Washington to the Palestinian Authority and obtained by Haaretz on Friday, the Obama Administration will assign blame and take action if indirect talks fail due to one side’s fault. After clearly stating Washington’s position for “a viable, independent and sovereign Palestinian State with contiguous territory that ends the occupation that began in 1967″, the report continues:
We expect both parties to act seriously and in good faith. If one side, in our judgment, is not living up to our expectations, we will make our concerns clear and we will act accordingly to overcome that obstacle.
Flynt Leverett and Hillary Mann Leverett, who served in the CIA, the National Security Council and the State Department during the Clinton and Bush administrations, declare on their website that Syrian President Bashar Assad told them two weeks ago that the U.S. policy in the Middle East has been wrong for the past decade and has created a vacuum that improved the regional strategic standing for Iran, Syria, and Turkey.
Israel does not want peace with Syria. Let’s take off all the masks we’ve been hiding behind and tell the truth for a change. Let’s admit that there’s no formula that suits us, except the ludicrous “peace for peace.” Let’s admit it to ourselves, at least, that we do not want to leave the Golan Heights, no matter what. Indirect Israel-Palestine Dialogue: On Wednesday, the leader of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, found political cover to enter into an indirect dialogue with Israel, as 14 ministers of the Arab League agreed in Cairo that the PA should engage in indirect negotiations with Israel for a preliminary four-month period. The Arab ministers also mentioned that no progress will be possible without a complete settlement freeze, indicating that the four months will be an assessment process.
“Despite the lack of conviction in the seriousness of the Israeli side, the committee sees that it would give the indirect talks the chance as a last attempt and to facilitate the US role,” said Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa.
Since 20 October 2008, the Turkey Government has been occupied with Ergenekon, a neo-nationalist group accused of plotting against the State.
It all started with 27 hand bombs, TNT moulds, and detonators found in a house on 12 June 2007. Since then, evidence from wiretappings, weapons taken from excavations, and purported assassination plans allegedly show a “grand project” pursued by the “deep state”. According to an indictment which is now more than 2500 pages, arrested politicians, journalists, lawyers, intellectuals, and generals formed a “terrorist” organization to create chaos weakening the ruling Justice and Development Party and justifying a military coup.
Netanyahu’s Iran Speech: Speaking to the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, on Tuesday depicted Iran as a runaway train and the international community as a rail car waiting on the edge. “There is a technological clock and a diplomatic clock. The technological clock is like a runaway train and the international community like a car that is about to decouple.”
On the diplomatic clock, Netanyahu mentioned the Israeli delegation in China and described a “wide range of mutual interests” between Beijing and Israel. Netanyahu stated that he was not successful in obtaining Moscow’s consent to tougher sanctions on Tehran but said he witnessed “more understanding there regarding the dangers the Iranian nuclear program poses to us, to regional peace and world stability”.
Obama Administration’s Next Message to be in Israel: U.S. Vice President Joe Biden is due in Israel on March 8, for a three-day visit that will also include the Palestinian Authority. An Israeli political source has told Haaretz that Biden would like “to make a speech that is important and significant for Israeli-American relations”. The aims of this high-level visit to Israel are to ensure that Israel’s response will be restricted with the diplomatic track and to give a strong “alliance” message to Israelis as President Obama gave in Turkey and Egypt last year.

Little coming out of Iran tonight; in contrast, every “Western” news outlet is screaming about the draft International Atomic Energy report on Iran’s nuclear programme. 1830 GMT: Political Prisoner News. “Green media” pull together reports that we carried last night: 50 detainees were released, including Shahabeddin Tabatabei, member of the Islamic Iran Participation Front and head of youth in support of Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mohammad Khatami, Parisa Kakaei of the Committee of Human Rights Reporters, student activist Maziar Samiee, and Khosrow Ghashghai of the Freedom Movement of Iran.
