Update on Muntazar al-Zaidi: Rallies in Tehran and Washington
Sunday, December 28, 2008 at 13:14
The sad reality is that there is almost nothing to report on Muntazar al-Zaidi's case. There is total silence in advance of the trial date of 31 December.
The only story of note in the last 72 hours has been the protest of Iranians near Tehran University before Friday prayers. Even this requires a bit of searching, as only the BBC to my knowledge has provided coverage.
It will be interesting to see if the press gives any attention to a demonstration in a much different part of the world, Monday's rally in front of the Iraqi Consulate in Washington DC.

I once threw a shoe at someone, and later I was, briefly a journalist. The shoe I hefted was in fact a clog, which was fashionable footwear at the time, but heavier. The target an absconding teenager with a string of burglaries to his wrap-sheet.
I can't imagine being jailed for my offence, and if al Zaidi got carried away and threw his Doc Martin and M. Bush, assuming that it missed, I can't see wot all the fuss is about, can you?
I mean it wasn't a hand grenade wuz it?

Now, you wouldn't be comparing "an absconding teenager with a string of teenagers" to the 43rd President of the USA, would you?
To me, seeing al zaidi alive on Dec 24 tv interview is not only news, but good news. He was wearing an orthopedic collar and had a broken tooth. The link to his interview with zavenonline, in arabic language, is (http://www.future.com.lb/videos/scF-5236200047700.asx). Also, a statement from his lawyer in English is at http://www.roadstoiraq.com/2008/12/24/al-zaidi’s-juridical-status/
For some reason, this update has not been widely broadcasted.
