Pilot Podcast: The (Continuing) War on Terror
Thursday, December 4, 2008 at 18:41
Enduring America history: following up on yesterday's post about The (Continuing) War on Terror: Kill All the Crazies, this is our pilot podcast.
The Washington Post proposes, in the wake of the Mumbai attacks, “a crackdown on terrorists”.
But how shall we crack down on terrorists? Certainly not by treating them as rational and thus understanding how they could justify these killings.

The kind of non-violent terrorism we saw in the 1960s and early 1970s carried out by the Catholic Left in response to America's war in Vietnam is far different from that of Al-Qaeda or any other Islamic terrorism we see today from Muslim groups. Breaking into draft offices, holding government staff hostage temporarily while carrying out destruction of government property and so on. The rationale behind these attacks was that weapons, draft files, and other elements that destroy human life have no value in society. They have no value and because they have no value, they have no right to exist. And that was why Catholics and other Christians destroyed such property. Holy Scripture was read when these acts were carried out. One such individual even stated that such activity was "an extension of the Eucharist." Individuals who planned and executed these attacks were on the FBI's most wanted list and some went underground to avoid/delay prison sentences. Such activity continued into the 1980s, with attacks on submarines and other parts of the military industrial complex.
I think it is much easier to make the rationality case for the Catholic Left than for those who carried out the 1993 WTC attack, the 9/11 attacks and the Mumbai attacks. I don't think those that carried out the Mumbai attacks were rational individuals. Human life was spared by the Catholic Left precisely because of their conviction -- that human life is the final value of the Christian doctrine.
So, were the Mumbai attackers psychologically messed up? I would say yes.
How about comparing the case of the Palestinians with that of the German Jews after the Nuremberg Laws of 1935? Were the Jews not rational beings because they didn't turn themselves into human bombs?
