Iran Special: The List of the 100+ Journalists Detained Since the 2009 Elections --- Part 1 (Alinejad/Irani)

Since the disputed June 2009 Presidential Election, EA has periodically featured the names of journalists on Arshama3's Blog --- a list which is up to 70 entries.

Now another record of those reporters who have been imprisoned --- or who are free on heavy bail but always threatened with a summons back to detention --- has been compiled by Masih Alinejad and translated into English by Azita Irani. There is also the note of at least one journalist who was slain during the initial demonstrations after the election.

We will be presenting the more than 100 entries on a rolling basis over the next few days. And we will endeavour, with the help of Arshama3 and Alinejad, to keep the list up to date.

24. Hossein Nouraninejad

Nouraninejad, the head of Jebhe-ye Mosharekat Melli Eslami (Islamic Coalition Front), was arrested on 17 September 2009 and spent one year in prison. He was a staff reporter at the Iranian Labor News Agency and reformist newspapers. After the Presidential election, he played an active role in organising religious events for reformist groups, particularly in connection with political prisoners.

Nouraninejad was one of 16 political prisoners at Evin Prison who participated in hunger strikes protesting the ill treatment by prison guards. His mother and his wife, Parastou Sarmadi, repeatedly complained to the media about the prisoners’ situation, until the security forces attempted to arrest Nouraninejad's mother. They forced her to sign a consent form to her detention if she continued to protest the imprisonment of her son by talking to the press.

Iran Men's Fashion Video Special: "Are These Shorts Getting You in the Mahmoud?"

Noted American political commentator Stephen Colbert takes a stand against Iran's new order for the "morality police", cracking down on inappropriate fashion such as shorts and men's necklaces. He even has a fashion suggestion for the Supreme Leader: "The Ayatollah might be a lot less angry if he got some air down there."

Once you have decided whose legs are better --- Colbert's or Khameini's? --- then Arshama3's Blog works with an EA feature from July 2010 to give you the wider context: proper politics comes not only from proper clothing but from proper haircuts....

Iran "Gold Medal" Feature: The List of More than 100 Detained Journalists

This week the Committee to Protect Journalists announced that 145 journalists were in prison in 2010. Iran and China led an ignominious list with each having 34 reporters behind bars.

We suspected, however, that Tehran may actually have claimed the gold medal for detentions. So we turned to Arshama3's Blog, which has maintained a comprehensive list since autumn 2009.

We asked Arshama for an update and received this list. While further information is needed in some cases, it appears that more than 100 journalists are in prison today, with others facing a return to serve sentences that have been handed down:

Iran Witness: Sara's Return to Her Homeland

I have known of Sara for months through social media. However, I did not realise that she had recently gone back to Iran until her account appeared yesterday on Arshama3's Blog.

This is a fascinating, illuminating, and sometimes frightening account well worth reading to the conclusion of Sara's trip. Her final paragraphs:

I want to thank anyone reading this for reading. If you have any questions, please ask. I will answer them as good as I can. I know I have forgotten things or left them out, to not make a too long story.

Also I want to ask your (continued) support for Iran.

Iran Feature: Naming the Officials in the Attacks on Karroubi's House and Qoba Mosque

In the five nights before Qods (Palestine) Day on 3 September, the residential complex of opposition cleric Mehdi Karroubi was surrounded by a pro-regime crowd. Violence escalated until, on the fifth night, a group tried to storm Karroubi's apartment. Several people were injured; Karroubi's bodyguard was reported to have been seriously wounded.

On Qods Day, a pro-regime crowd launched an assault on Qoba Mosque in Shiraz, the base of opposition cleric Ayatollah Dastgheib. They entered the mosque, injuring worshippers and forcing the abandonment of services.

Now Tagheer website, linked to Karroubi, claims that Mohammad Larijani, Governor of Shemiranat country in Tehran Province, was involved in the assault on the Karroubi home. It adds that Mohammad Larijani was in regularly telephone contact with Morteza Tamaddon, Governor of Tehran, reporting on the attacks from the scene.

On the Qoba Mosque front, Arshama3's Blog posts the list from opposition websites of 41 alleged attackers. Of the 41, only Hojatoleslam Voldan has been arrested; he was released on 25 September on bail.
