The Latest from Iran (12 January): The Killing of the Professor

I think Marandi himself and all his descendants won't be able to go to USA !! how liar is he !!
"Bar doroughgoo laanat " ; the poor man is not really clever ! in the end of a hated regime, he has to be honest , think more about his own future and behave differently !

Ange Paris, what do you expect from a regime that kills Neda and depicts it in SS (Seda va Sima) as a suicide plot? Every citizen, who does not belong to the ruling mafia, is to be considered as fair game in the IRI, and she even sacrifices her own agents, with vajebi as in the case of Saeed Emami.

Ali Saeedi, SL's deputy to the Sepah, said in a conference on Defense against Soft War: "It is worth to sacrifice the lives of 75.000 people to save this system."

Mr Saeedi has forgotten three zero : he wanted to say 75 000 000 people to save this disgusted regime !

I remember a debate a few weeks ago about, if Marandi honestly believes what he says vs. he is lying (for a "greater good" or personal benefits). Being an employee of Tehran university and claiming that the killed professor was an nuclear physicists and strong supporter of the regime (in order to blame Israel/US), cannot be taken as an honest mistake.

I am a theoretical physicist myself and have been looked through the published papers of professor Massoud Alimohammadi (from 1993 to 2009). The majority of the papers are about particle physics, quantum gravity and cosmology. And a very few papers are about mathematical analogies of Condensed Matter Physics (fractional quantum Hall effect). Generally his papers are very theoretical and not many can be experimentally tested with todays technology. (Though still very interesting, I'm personally interested in this kind of physics)

Contrary, people working on nuclear reactors are mainly experimental physicists or even engineers. If he had anything to do with the nuclear program, I will bet on his work was not of any great importance. Not to mention that his support of the opposition would make him untrustworthy.

Lets go as far as claiming that he had a key role in the nuclear project, why kill him with a bomb when this could be done much more quitly? It seems very convenient for the regime that US/Israel/MKO/whatever killed a person unimportant for the nuclear program, was supporting the opposition and can be used as a tool of propaganda. Hmmmm...

Marandi was BEYOND incoherent, in a state TV broadcast. "Everyone" he's talked to believes it was a "Zionist/US/MEK" plot? Really? And how many people has he talked to?

And his answer on "Why target an academic"? Full. Of. Fail. Really, incoherent gobbedlygook. Uh, b/c the West targets all Iranians. Huh?

Dr. Marandi, hate to break it to you, but before June '09, I'll bet a majority (or a disturbingly large minority) of western policymakers (US, UK, Canada, etc.) would have struggled to tell you anything about Mehdi Karroubi. Now, we're targeting a previously obscure physicist?* Nice try, Marandi.

*And he destroys his credibility by parroting the (incorrect) gov't description of Alimohammadi as a nuke scientist.

It should be noted that the speaker, Dr. Marandi, is a well-known spokesman for the regime. His father is a former health minister and is the personal physician to the Supreme Leader. He is not merely a co-worker as the television station would lead you believe.

If this is a crime scene, why are all the street cleaners allowed to so blatantly tamper with the evidence? I guess the Iranian state police has no interest in finding the criminals who did this because they already know that the blood is on their hands. They did this to silence a Moussavi supporter who had no connection with Iran's efforts to build nuclear bombs.

I agree Kipp. It's an easy propaganda ploy for them.

January 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJasonSnitker

I am 100% agree with you Kipp. Isn't it pretty obvious? Quick enough to blame some groups "supported by the zionist and western government" and quick enough to clean up evidence to hide their crimes?

January 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterCecil

dear readers who don't know Teheran's street, there is no way the fire department and police can reach any area in less than at least 30 to 45 minutes, unless they know something is about happened and they are there already.
They knew this killing is going to happened and they were ready for it, and regarding their neighbour, the motorbike was parked there for past three day.
God bless his soul, Mr. Mohammad Ali, was a particle physicist( according to his students) and on the other hand he was out spoken and well known supporter of Mr. Mousavi,
He has been killed for his belief. My heart goes to his family and his students.

January 13, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterNOOSHAFARIN

Agree with Kipp as well and thank you Nooshafarin for sharing your perspective. Like kevina points out I would like to know his sources as well. As it seems that most agree, there is something very sinister behind the scenes in relation to this incident. Another propoganda attempt by the government which is full of holes in logic and basis it is beyond ridiculous. Do they really think everyone is going to sit back and allow the govermnet to spread their version of the story?

January 13, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterBijan

Marandi believes that the Islamic Republic of Iran protects and executes the will of the creator of space and time. Try to reason with that.

keeping a dicator alive is a big job. this marandi...all the students watch him very carefully and avoid him - he has a fake phd and his teaching is not in political science - so why is he here? this guys dad Alireza MarandiFormer health minister is Khamenei's medical coordinator (NB Professor Alireza Marandi)

January 13, 2010 | Unregistered Commentermaliheh[tehranweekly]

For the record....

Seyed Mohammad Marandi's Ph.D. is not fake; I've read the thesis and was at the University of Birmingham when it was examined. His teaching is in "American Studies", linking literature, culture, history, and politics. I also know (and have taught) his students, several of whom were at the Beirut conference I attended last week.

One of my favorite videos:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3SIQs4D5hY

I usually don't like CNN or Fareed Zakaria but in this case, he turned my ideas on their head. Good on you, mate. But the real question is, why do you even have him on your show?

January 13, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterNomad

Mohammad Marandi needs to stop looking for scapegoats and wallowing in his own self pity

January 13, 2010 | Unregistered Commentermaliheh[tehranweekly]

Kipp (post 9) makes an excellent point about street cleaners quickly appearing on the scene and destroying forensic evidence. If this was a state sanctioned/ realised murder, then they've taken a page from the Benazir Bhutto assassination playbook. Having spent hours in Tehran traffic myself I can vouch for NOOSHAFARIN's observation in post 12. It's already very heavy at 08:00 - the time at which the attack occurred.

On 8 January in another thread, I posted my final thoughts on Dr Marandi and suggested an alternative go-to Iranian academic for those who are sick of Marandi: Tehran University political science professor Dr. Sadegh Zibakalam. This is followed by an overview of Zibakalam's commentary and opinions in the form of quotes and links to the source articles. My post got lost in the downtime EA suffered back then, so here's a link to it for those interested:
