The Uighurs are a Muslim minority in China, but are the largest ethnic group in Xinjiang, an area about the size of Alaska. They constitute roughly half of the province’s 20 million inhabitants.

The Chinese government, calling the demonstrations "riots" and showed protesters on attacking people on the streets and setting fire to vehicles.

As the US State Department stated, “We call on all sides for calm and restraint”, the Chinese government accused the exiled Uighur leader, Rebiya Kaader, who is living in the US, of organizing "riots". The Uighur leader rejected these claims.
