Quite a few readers have asked what it’s like to be spending the holidays back in Georgia in the American South. You know, a place where we don’t call it the American Civil War but The War of Northern Aggression or The Sacred Defense Against the Yankee Invader.

I wasn’t sure how to answer, then I got this inspiration listening to my favourite station, Outlaw Radio:

Here in the Northeast GA we don’t have “favourite” radio stations, so I’m not sure where you’re coming from. We also still call the civil war the “Civil War” unless in mixed company. I’ve never heard of “The Sacred Defense Against the Yankee Invader”, but they are still invading us so I guess we are losing again.

    Allen,

Appreciate the comment — I highly recommend Outlaw, having just discovered it during this trip back home.

Maybe “Sacred Defense Against the Yankee Invader” is a term limited to Alabama, where I grew up. But what do you call the Civil War when you’re in mixed company?

You call it “the late unpleasantness.”
